DESTINATIONS FOR SINGLE DAY TRIPS

MADRID
Madrid is still an unknown region for many birders, however in a full day guided one can see Great and Little Bustards in the
open fields of the North East side, Citril Finches in the Guadarrama mountains or even Spanish Imperial Eagle at El Pardo Nature Reserve, just to mention some of the species which still survive not further than 30 minutes driving from a city of 5 million inhabitants! For those who are also keen in museums, local food and red wine Madrid offers the travellers an interesting selection of possibilities... |
|
GREDOS MOUNTAINS
The mountains of Gredos offer the chance to locate some of the most wanted species by foreign birders. In Spring and Summer these are one of the best mountains to see Bluethroat, Ortolan Bunting or Rufuous-tailed Rock Thrush amongst many others. Citril Finches are also present all year round while the iberian race of Pied Flycatcher is a regular breeding bird. In the grounds of our hotel breed European Nightjars, Dartford Warbler and Rock Bunting.

WETLANDS OF LA MANCHA
Between the pronvinces of Cuenca, Toledo and Ciudad Real extends a vast flat region known as La Mancha. Apart from big farms of grapes and olive trees plantations there are a complex of wetlands where many interesting birds still survive. In the winter thousands of Common Cranes can be easily seen here, however the Spring is the most exciting season with plenty
Collared Pratincoles, Purple Herons or Montagu's Harriers. But the most representative species of La Mancha is with no doubt the White-headed
Duck with several dozens of pairs breeding in this region.

EXTREMADURA
A journey of about two hours by road takes you to the wonderful land of Extremadura, one of the best areas for birding in Western Europe. Raptors gallore and steppe specialities are
here the most representative birds... which includes Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Vulture, Bonelli's Eagle, Azure-winged Magpie, Great Bustard, Litle Bustard,
Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse all present all year round.
